Greater Columbus Sports Commission
The brief
The Greater Columbus Sports Commission (GCSC) was created in 2002 to attract professional, collegiate, amateur and youth sporting events to the Greater Columbus area. The Sports Commission has worked with grassroots organizations, The Ohio State University, Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Clippers, Columbus Crew and many other local organizations to secure marquee sporting events that have generated millions of dollars in visitor spending as well as national and international media attention for the community.
The Response
TSE constructed two strategies to focus on the Greater Columbus Sports Commission's goal of becoming the premier amateur sports destination in the country. The first program targeted the 83 available NCAA championships in all three competitive divisions.Through careful research and deliberation, Columbus targeted 12 NCAA championships on which to bid during the cycle. The NCAA selected Columbus to host eight championships - equating to one of the highest success rates in the country. The second segment of the program focused on the NCAA Women's Final Four. Following an unsuccessful bid in 2008, GCSC asked TSE to review the previous bid and identify deficiencies and areas of improvement. In January 2014, Columbus was selected as one of seven finalist cities for the Women's Final Four. Work on the final presentation is being completed and an announcement from the NCAA will be made at the end of November.
