London Tops Ranking of Sports Cities for Third Consecutive Year

London is the world’s leading sports city, according to voters who participated in the ‘2014 Ranking of Sports Cities.

Rounding out the top five finishers are Sydney (AUS), Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Lausanne (SUI). New additions to the top ten cities include Lausanne, Los Angeles, and Glasgow (GRB). They replace Vancouver (CAN), New York and Paris, which fall out of the top ten.

The ‘2014 Ranking of Sports Cities’, presented by Around the Rings in collaboration with TSE Consulting, ranks the top 50 sports cities from around the world on how much the public associates the city with sport. Results are based on a public online vote coupled with an industry vote from sports experts.

“The Ranking of Sports Cities is a very interesting and attractive tool for the industry since it is based on the perception from the public and sports experts – the results simply reflect the market trends,” says Lars Haue-Pedersen, Managing Director, TSE Consulting.

“The results show that bidding for or hosting major international sports events, such as Continental Games or Olympic Games, strongly increase the chance of cities being perceived as having a strong association with sport. Additionally, any efforts made by cities in regard to the development of a strategic sports programme generally pays-off.”

To ensure the credibility of the Ranking’s results, answers from sports experts are weighted more heavily than answers from the general public.

New cities to be added to the 2015 edition of the Ranking, as chosen by voters, are Calgary (CAN), Dallas (USA) and Montreal (CAN).

This annual ranking is built around a group of 50 cities selected in 2012 through criteria such as staging recent and upcoming Olympics or other major multi-sport Games, hosting professional sports teams as well as organising major championships or world-class events such as tennis Grand Slams and Formula 1 races. With each edition of the poll, the three lowest ranked cities drop off the list, and the three top-named cities by the survey respondents are added. 2014 is the third year the Ranking has been published.

The Ranking is published once a year to effectively capture the constant evolvement of the international sports world. Visit for more coverage.
