Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, wins the right to host Triathlon’s ITU Grand Final in 2019

Lausanne (SUI), June 14, 2016 – The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has awarded the 2019 edition of the ITU Grand Final, Triathlon’s flagship event, to Lausanne, the Olympic Capital. The Swiss city will also organize an ITU World Cup stage in 2018. The other bidder for the event was the city of Edmonton (CAN).

The delegation who presented the bid of Lausanne 2019 to the International Triathlon Union’s Executive Committee was supported during the 6 months long campaign by Lausanne based specialist consultancy TSE Consulting. The team will now start working on delivering a spectacular edition of the ITU Grand Final, just one year before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The delegation included members such as: Marc Vuilleumier, Municipal Councillor of the City of Lausanne in charge of sports, Patrick Schmid, President of Swiss Triathlon, Steeve Pasche, Director of Lausanne Tourism, Patrice Iseli, Head of Sport of the City of Lausanne, as well as Lausanne Triathlon organisers Claude Thomas, Director, Bernard Vuillamy, Technical Director, and Gael Lasserre, General Secretary.

Two world-renown Swiss athletes were also part of the presentation, including London 2012 Gold Medallist Nicola Spirig (via video) and 2016 European Championships bronze medallist Andrea Salvisberg.

Marc Vuilleumier, Municipal Councillor of the City of Lausanne in charge of sports, said: “We have hosted a Triathlon every year in the Olympic Capital since 1994. We’ve had world Championships twice, the last time in 2006. In 2019, we want, together with the ITU, to showcase Triathlon in a new way, with a new course, right in the heart of the Olympic Capital. For us, it is also a fantastic way to promote our sporting city to the world, against the spectacular backdrop of the lake and the Alps. We look forward to strengthen our ties with the ITU in the years to come.”

Patrick Schmid, President of Swiss Triathlon, said: “Lausanne has brought a lot to Swiss and International Triathlon over the years. It is a great chance for us to continue building our sport, and for the ITU to continue to showcase Triathlon to the international sports world.”

Andrea Salvisberg, bronze medallist, 2016 European Championships in Triathlon: “This link to the Olympic Movement is crucial for the continued development of our sport. I am very proud to have contributed to bring the Grand Final to the Olympic Capital, and of course, I can’t wait to compete in my home country, just a few months before the Games in Tokyo.”

Lausanne will also be host to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games and the 2020 IIHF World Championships.
